Rotherham is not an isolated incident

‘The ball bounces high in the shadows off the gable end and a handful of kids chase it down the road. Under the stairway to the flats nearby, half a dozen teenage girls lie sprawled on the concrete, sheltering from the slate-grey drizzle. They watch the ball ping back up the street, strung out in the fading evening light, as the acrid smell of cannabis hangs overhead. Further down the road, a group of lads in hoodies mill around the off-licence asking passers-by if they can buy a few cans of strong lager for them.
It’s a scene you’ll find in many parts of northern England and one I’m all too familiar with. Even now, when I see the boredom and despair in kids’ eyes out on the streets, the same feeling comes back to me. Growing up in a single-parent family near Burnley, drinking at 14 and hanging around off-licences asking grown-ups to buy me a drink, just as I see in Rochdale now, I knew about the vulnerability of kids roaming the streets with nothing to do. There were dangers then, but now it’s worse. For gangs of men looking to groom kids to be violently abused, they’re easy prey.’

Why is it so important that Ashya King receive the most dangerous treatment choice?

It is hard to understand the behaviour of the British authorities towards the family of Ashya King.
‘Here is a child with a tumour known as medulloblastoma – a serious condition that is hard to treat, with only two options that have been shown to the general public.
The treatment protocol on offer at Southampton General Hospital is called the packer regime and includes high dose radiotherapy to the entire neck, back, head and spine and a prolonged chemotherapy cycle with vincristine and cisplatin – all of which are cytoxic drugs with devastating side effects.
The drugs cause hearing loss, neuropathy and kidney damage; and the long-term effects of the regime include pituitary gland deformity and secondary malignant tumours. Vox Political is advised that it is commonly known that unfortunately the regime often has devastating effects long term.’

Ashya King’s parents banned from seeing him as part of ‘inhuman’ treatment

‘The parents of the five-year-old cancer patient Ashya King face being barred from visiting him until at least the end of the week as part of “inhuman” restrictions placed on them after the boy was made a ward of court by a judge.
Brett and Naghemeh King remain in custody in separate prisons in Madrid, and could be in jail until Thursday, after an extradition hearing was postponed on Monday.
Meanwhile Ashya is under police guard in a hospital in Malaga, hundreds of miles to the north. The family fear his health may be deteriorating because he is likely to be afraid and “confused”.’

NHS ‘at mercy of predatory US healthcare firms’ if controversial Washington trade deal goes through

‘The NHS will be at the mercy of predatory US healthcare firms if a controversial trade deal with Washington goes through, a top Tory admitted.
Trade Minister Ian Livingston claimed it was “not necessary” to exempt the NHS from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement, known as TTIP.
But health campaigners fear the free trade pact will open up the NHS to profit-hungry American firms.’

Major quarantine and experimental vaccines to curb Ebola

‘The Ebola epidemic in West Africa is raging out of control. Known cases have topped 3000 – with the true number thought to be two to four times that – and they are climbing exponentially, doubling every 35 days. The World Health Organization warns of a possible 20,000 known cases in the coming months if efforts to control the outbreak do not bear fruit.
The virus has now invaded Senegal, a fifth country, in what the WHO are calling a top-priority emergency.
The only effective controls are tracking and quarantining people exposed to the virus, and perhaps a vaccine. Last week, the WHO outlined an aggressive road map to stop the spread of the virus. It implied that this could involve quarantining entire communities in badly affected areas. An effort to do this without warning the community ended in riots in a slum in Monrovia, Liberia, last month, but the WHO hopes more community involvement will help in future.’

UK could join American air strikes in Iraq and Syria, warns David Cameron

‘David Cameron has raised the prospect of Britain joining American air strikes in Iraq and Syria, stating that he is prepared to “act immediately” without first informing MPs if national security is threatened.
The Prime Minister said he would use a Nato meeting this week to review whether “military measures” were needed against the “barbaric” extremists of Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil).
He used a House of Commons statement to set out a series of measures to protect Britain from the thousands of European citizens who have travelled to Iraq and Syria and want to “wreak havoc on our country”.’

Majority of Britons opposed to bombing Isis in Iraq and Syria but David Cameron leaves the door to action open

‘Only one in three people supports Britain launching air strikes against Isis in Iraq and Syria, according to a survey for The Independent.
David Cameron yesterday left the door open to Britain joining the United States, which has already bombed Isis targets in Iraq. But the ComRes poll found that the Prime Minister would face strong public opposition if he decided to join the US bombing campaign.’
