Human Rights Watch: Civilian death toll in Eastern Ukraine rising due to ‘indiscriminate and unlawful’ shelling

‘Human Rights Watch has condemned the illegality of Ukrainian actions in east Ukraine, ascribing direct blame to Kiev for the rising death toll in the Lugansk Region, which by local estimates has reached 300 since May.
The organization visited the city on August 20-22, performing a survey of the situation and carrying out interviews with locals who in one way or another were affected by the heavy bombardment, which had people cowering in fear in basements for weeks without water or electricity.’

Ukraine defense minister warns of ‘great war’ in Europe

‘Ukrainian Defense Minister Valeriy Geletey has warned of an impending “great war” in Europe as the conflict escalates between Ukraine, backed by its Western allies, and Russia.
“A great war has arrived at our doorstep — the likes of which Europe has not seen since World War II. Unfortunately, the losses in such a war will be measured not in the hundreds but thousands and tens of thousands,” Geletey wrote in a message posted on his Facebook page on Monday.
He further claimed that “hundreds of Russian soldiers and officers have permanently entered Ukraine’s (eastern) ‘black earth’ region.” Geletey made the comments a day after alleging that Russian troops were moving in the main cities of Lugansk and Donetsk.’

Shelling Kills Hundreds in Besieged Luhansk in East Ukraine

‘Hundreds have died in artillery attacks on eastern Ukraine’s key city of Luhansk as government troops continue to lay siege to the militia stronghold, according to a senior official of the self-proclaimed Luhansk People’s Republic.

Vladimir Putin signs historic $20bn oil deal with Iran to bypass Western sanctions

‘Vladimir Putin has agreed a $20bn (£11.8bn) trade deal with Iran that will see Russia sidestep Western sanctions on its energy sector.
Under the terms of a five-year accord, Russia will help Iran organise oil sales as well as “cooperate in the oil-gas industry, construction of power plants, grids, supply of machinery, consumer goods and agriculture products”, according to a statement by the Energy Ministry in Moscow.

100,000 people internally displaced in Ukraine: UN

‘The United Nations’ refugee agency says over 100,000 people have been internally displaced in Ukraine and another 170,000 people have fled to Russia.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) warned on Tuesday of a massive exodus over the crisis in eastern Ukraine, saying the number of people internally displaced has risen from 2,600 to about 103,000 over the past two months.
The international body added that about 1,200 people are fleeing violence in the country every day.’
