‘How the flighty have fallen. In April 2010, after the first televised General Election party leader debate — when Nick Clegg stared down the camera with the most plausible sincerity at the viewing public — the Liberal Democrats briefly overtook the Conservatives and Labour in the opinion polls.
Now his party has a voter approval rating of 6 per cent, far below the figure it was polling when his two predecessors as leader were asked to make way for someone more likely to preserve the Lib Dems’ foothold in Parliament.
One reason for this prospect of electoral slaughter at the real poll in seven months’ time is no criticism of Clegg. He rightly took up the challenge offered by David Cameron to join the Conservatives to create a governing majority in Parliament, rather than to continue in opportunist opposition.’
